7-29 SS Mike Babcock Hunts

7-29 SS Mike Babcock Hunts

Stanley cups and hunting big-game come together in Sportsman’s Spotlight.

If you’ve watched any National Hockey League games over the last decade, you have probably come across a fiery, auburn haired guy standing behind the bench as the head coach of either the Anaheim ducks, or, presently, the Detroit Red Wings. His name is Mike Babcock and he has had nothing but success in motivating his teams. For example, on June 4, 2008, Babcock led the Detroit Red Wings to a Stanley Cup championship and he also guided Team Canada to gold medals at the 1997 world junior championships in Geneva and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Another passion for Mike… Hunting. I caught up with him on his cell phone while he was vacationing way up north in Canada. “I think I’m like everybody else. You hunted everything all your life and then when I got to the income tax league, I could afford to do a little bit more, I have been to Africa three different times and those are world-class hunts but some of my best hunts are here in North America. I was above the Arctic Circle last year hunting Dall sheep and I ended up with a great Arctic grizzly, a caribou and a Dall sheep, the scenery and  having everything on your back was great. I have had some adrenaline packed hunts, I love doing it, I don’t think about hockey when I’m hunting or business, I just enjoy hunting and one of the things I’m very thankful for is the fact that I hunted with my father and now I hug my kids when I get a chance.”
