During the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in New Orleans, Shane Bedwell, COO and Director of Breed Improvement for the American Hereford Association gave attendees an update on the how the association is doing.

He said when pounds still equal dollars-nothing beats a Hereford bull.

"Absolutely and the breeders have done such a great job raising the bar and putting out a quality product out there" said Bedwell. "We at the association try to provide the most progressive tools possible for our breeders to make the best decisions and arm them with the tools that can make that product even better. And you're spot on the direct heterosis is real. We're gaining market share in the country because of that. And what these guys are also seeing is the maternal heterosis from those good baldy females that they're keeping back they're helping pay right now when things are getting a little bit tighter. That added longevity along with the fertility pregnancy rates are things that are all working in our advantage."

On the beef side, Bedwell said it's also an exciting time for their Certified Hereford Beef Program. For more information, visit www.hereford.org.
