Fields of wheat from border to border of our beautiful state. But how are our wheat farmers doing in view of these challenging times? You will find out...
Idaho is such a wheat rich state. I do stories all winter long about trade, webinars, what’s the latest in wheat producing technology... but now we are dead center in the middle of the summer and this is a wonderful time to find out how our wheat crop is progressing. There is no better source of information on that subject than the Executive Director of the Idaho Wheat Commission, Blaine Jacobson. I called him up and I asked, what’s up with wheat? “Idaho is going to have a terrific crop again this year. But it varies across the state. Northern Idaho is going to have a well above average crop. They have had good growing conditions and sufficient rainfall and this will be the best crop they’ve had in 10 or 15 years. Southern Idaho, where it is grown on rotation and grown under irrigation is going to be pretty much average and then the drive farms of Eastern Idaho are going to be below average because they are being affected by the drought. Tough times for the growers over there, really great times for the growers up in northern Idaho.
